Sigmund Freud’s daughter studied emotional difficulties in children after family fled to London before second world war

Google’s latest doodle celebrates the birthday of Anna Freud, daughter of Sigmund Freud and a celebrated psychoanalyst in her own right, who is regarded as one of the founders of psychoanalytic child psychology.

Born in Vienna in 1895, the sixth and last child in the family, her immersion in her father’s work began at the age of 13, when she began participating in his weekly discussions on psychoanalytic ideas.

Following an early career as a teacher, she quit the profession due to ill-health and started to seriously follow in her father’s footsteps in the years after the first world war.

Freud became a member of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Society after presenting her paper “Beating Fantasies and Daydreams” in 1922 and became a director in 1935 of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Training Institute.

After the Freuds fled Austria in the face of increasing persecution of Jews by the Nazis, she organised their emigration to London and continued with her work as well as looking after her father, by then seriously ill due to jaw cancer.

When the second world war broke out, Freud opened the Hampstead War Nursery for children who had been left homeless, and often orphaned, as a result of the conflict. Her research into the impact of stress and separation on children was published along with Dorothy Burlingham.

After the nursery closed, Freud established the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic in 1952.
She continued to expand her writing, publishing “Normality and Pathology in Childhood” in 1965, which was to serve as a blueprint for the work she would undertake during the last part of her life.

In the 1970s she developed an interest in the difficulties suffered by emotionally deprived and disadvantaged children and continued to serve as director of the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic until her death in October 1982.

The Lizard Squad are up to their old tricks again as they have managed to take down Xbox Live for the time being.

The official Lizard Squad Twitter page sent out a simple message just saying: “Xbox Live #offline”.

If you visit Twitter right now, many people are moaning that Xbox Live is down right now for them. Gamers can only blame The Lizard Squad for this mess. These guys have been taking servers down since August of this year.

The Lizard Squad have been doing DDOS attacks on gaming servers for several months. Servers for PSN, Destiny and several EA games have been down thanks to this one group.

The Lizard Squad were quiet for a few weeks when Twitter suspended their account. They’ve created a new page and have started annoying gamers once again.

The Lizard Squad taking down Xbox Live was a “Christmas Present” to Microsoft the group said. They threatened this is just preparation for more things to come during the lead up to Christmas.

It will be annoying if PSN and Xbox Live goes down for Christmas during the days people have off from work or school. It looks like these guys don’t care. You better be prepared to play offline video games if these guys are still around…

Update: It appears Xbox Live is starting to come back online for some gamers. Still, The Lizard Squad have said more attacks are coming…

Apple Pay, meant to inject momentum into a fragmented market for the emerging mobile payments sector, has instead highlighted the squabbles between retailers and the banking and payments industry.

Since Apple Pay made its debut October 20 for US customers with the iPhone 6, several major retailers have said they would not use it.

That includes number one retail group Wal-Mart and the large pharmacy-retail group CVS, which has disabled payment terminals that could accept Apple Pay.

"You're never going to come up with anything as smooth (and) as easy as Apple Pay. But if you can't use it, you're going to use something else," said Avivah Litan, an analyst at Gartner who follows mobile payments.

Litan said a few retailers, such as McDonald's and Disney, like the system because it speeds transactions and "every fraction of a second goes to the bottom line."

But she noted that for most retailers, credit card fees simply are too high.

Apple Pay has aligned itself with major banks and payment processors Visa and MasterCard, which take a cut of every transaction, typically two to three percent.

Retailers, which often operate on razor-thin profit margins, would like to cut or eliminate those fees, and Apple Pay does nothing to change that system.

"Most of the merchants have been hungry for competition," Litan said.

Stuck in neutral

Gartner projects mobile payments will hit $721 billion around the world by 2017. But some estimates have been lowered recently amid squabbles over the type of technology used and payment structure.
Apple uses a "near field communication" or NFC chip, similar to that used by Google Wallet and Softcard, which has been slow to gain traction.

Although Apple has signed on most major US banks, Visa and MasterCard, and retailers like Macy's and Staples, many others are balking.

A coalition of merchants led by Wal-Mart, Target and Sears called MCX is promoting its own system called CurrentC, using a different technology, and importantly, allowing retailers to bypass credit cards and use direct bank debits with lower transaction costs.

Apple Pay "really falls short when it comes to merchant value proposition," said Litan.

Nitesh Patel, analyst with Strategy Analytics, said retailers are not necessarily targeting Apple but want "to avoid what they believe are excessive swipe fees and the cost of upgrading hardware and software to accept contactless payments."

But he added that if Apple Pay catches on, the retailers will be forced to go along.

Patel said, however, that if the retailer sector does not unify around the contactless system used by Apple Pay, users may revert to their old habits, "since they will need to carry their payment cards and wallet with them anyway."

"This is a challenge that all proponents of contactless payments, Google Wallet, Softcard and Apple Pay face together," Patel told AFP.

The merchant system got a black eye when it revealed a data breach exposing customer emails, even though the app itself was not affected.

Forrester Research analyst Denee Carrington said security is an advantage for Apple.
"Apple Pay is highly secure, and the data privacy will mean that merchants are less likely to be hacked since they won't have card payment data that hackers are interested in," she said.
"Apple Pay is also very fast and consumers seem to like it as well."

Battle for customer data

Bob O'Donnell at Technalysis Research said Apple's privacy protections make the system less attractive to retailers, because they cannot as easily track customer habits to deliver coupons or marketing messages.

"They want that data," O'Donnell said. "That's why the grocery stores give you the loyalty cards."
O'Donnell said Apple has created excitement about mobile payments but has failed to bridge the differences among the market players.

"It gives momentum to the sector but it remains fragmented," he said.
"Apple Pay provides an example of the promise and the challenges of mobile payments in a very clear way."

Litan said meanwhile that the squabbles could intensify. And she noted that retailers which are disabling the ability to use contactless NFC technology could also be blocking rival systems.

The merchant-sponsored system uses a more cumbersome technology that requires customers to scan a QR (quick response) code and display that. But by bypassing the credit card system, it can reduce costs for merchants, who may pass on these savings to customers.

"The merchant systems are never going to be as convenient as Apple's," Litan said.

"They can't compete with Apple on convenience but they can on price. It's going to boil down to price versus convenience, and price usually wins."

A Look at Project Ara

As mobile communication technology progresses, we find ourselves depending more and more on devices that seem to address our needs and wants so well that it’s as if these smartphone companies know each and every one of us personally. From basic calling and texting features, to harnessing the potential of mobile Internet connectivity, these pieces of technology now enable us to communicate on a global level, making us all a part of a worldwide community. With every new model that’s introduced, these smartphones are simply getting smarter, better, and more equipped to become the single most indispensable piece of technology in our lives.

Now, the continuous evolution of the smartphone introduces yet and another step towards the future with Project Ara, a modular smartphone that allows the user to upgrade only specific parts of the phone as opposed to having to buy and entirely new phone. The Project Ara phone essentially comprises of an endoskeleton with modules which could be filled by different components, such as the CPU, the camera, the storage device and other parts of the smartphone. While the concept of basically building your own smartphone might come off as complex, keep in mind that if you could build a house using Lego, you could definitely master using a mobile phone from Project Ara.

Mightbe that’s an overly simplified analogy of Project Ara, but a more pressing concern is if such a device is the way to go in terms of considering the next step in mobile communication. Looking at it on a purely conceptual level, the Project Ara has the potential to revolutionize how mobile phones are made and sold, and would definitely have smartphone giants like Apple and Samsung scrambling to counteract the movement. On the other hand, it might become just another good idea that doesn’t become anything more than that: an idea. Is Project Ara a good thing? Let’s take a look at a few important points of discussion.

Would the user experience improve or not?

As much as we might like to think we live in a technologically-savvy world, the majority of smartphone users are essentially casual users. With social media being the reason the majority of smartphone users are keeping their hands and eyes glued to their phones, one could easily question the need for giving consumers such a level of control with upgrading their devices, especially when most would be perfectly to just purchase the latest models available.

On the other hand, the argument about a new piece of technology alienating a generation of new users have been made before, and a lot of times, that argument has been proven wrong. And more than anything, the Project Ara provides something that a lot of other smartphones could no longer provide: novelty. That in itself makes for a great user experience, for at least a specific period of time.

How much would it cost?

Pricing would be a critical matter in the success of Project Ara. While the ability to only upgrade specific components of your smartphone might seem a cheaper alternative to purchasing an entirely new smartphone, if the price difference for the act of buying a new phone and buying certain parts, then switching to Project Ara might not be worthwhile. For users to fully appreciate the changes to the smartphone norm, it’s important to remember that people would probably be hesitant to spend their money on an unproven technology when a proven option is available for not so much more.

How would competitors respond?

Once Project Ara comes out, companies like Apple and Samsung and the other forerunners in the smartphone business are going to have to address this breakthrough. With Project Ara phones coming out next year, it’s very interesting to see how the big dogs are going to answer this obvious challenge to their smartphone supremacy. It’s an interesting thought to entertain—what with all the years that these top companies have dominated the field and in comes something new that not only disregards the standards set by these companies, but basically reinvents the smartphone into a package that seemingly is more convenient and cheaper. With a paradigm shift of this magnitude, it would be nice to see the eventual push in innovation that this specific situation dictates.

Would Motorola once again run with the big dogs?

Project Ara is a Motorola baby. Motorola, a mobile communications company that once competed with Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung and others have fallen on the wayside the moment smartphones became the norm. This move by Motorola could be considered somewhat overdue, but one couldnot deny that while the move might be a little late in the game, this move is still a definite game changer.

Would Project Ara breathe new life into the once titanic company? Also, what would be the ramifications if Project Ara results into nothing more but a passing trend (a distinct possibility considering the number of supposed innovations predicted to be the next big thing)? It’s hard not to admire Motorola for taking such a bold move. If the Project Ara does succeed, then Motorola would definitely make its mark once more in the mobile communications industry.

If it doesn’t succeed, who’s to blame?

There are many questions hanging when it comes to Project Ara. While this groundbreaking move by Motorola has people excited, it remains to be seen of the general public is excited enough to support the project and turn it into a success. If it does fail, and that obviously might be a premature topic for discussion, but if it does fail, then what could be the possible cause of that failure?

The product itself is one questionable factor. A modular phone is indeed a good idea, but not all good ideas translate well into reality. Also, how would Project Ara be marketed? Remember that while the top companies might have optimum projects, it’s marketing that keeps them afloat. In a world wherein people have mostly made their choice when it comes to their tech preferences, it’s difficult to foresee a scenario wherein Project Ara would succeed without an aggressive marketing campaign. And of course, there’s always us, the consumers. Are we ready for Project Ara?

Here’s one last look at the project

Whether or not Project Ara makes it or takes a backseat to the fact that innovation is once again at work. It’s nice to know that while we live in a world where we already believe are smartphones are the greatest things ever, here comes a product that could potentially show us more. There is nothing wrong with reinventing the wheel, and if Motorola’s bold move pays off, then they deserve every piece of success they get. Is Project Ara a good thing? Yes. Any product that aims to improve something that’s already great is always a good thing.
