Sigmund Freud’s daughter studied emotional difficulties in children after family fled to London before second world war
Google’s latest doodle celebrates the birthday of Anna Freud, daughter of Sigmund Freud and a celebrated psychoanalyst in her own right, who is regarded as one of the founders of psychoanalytic child psychology.
Born in Vienna in 1895, the sixth and last child in the family, her immersion in her father’s work began at the age of 13, when she began participating in his weekly discussions on psychoanalytic ideas.
Following an early career as a teacher, she quit the profession due to ill-health and started to seriously follow in her father’s footsteps in the years after the first world war.
Freud became a member of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Society after presenting her paper “Beating Fantasies and Daydreams” in 1922 and became a director in 1935 of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Training Institute.
After the Freuds fled Austria in the face of increasing persecution of Jews by the Nazis, she organised their emigration to London and continued with her work as well as looking after her father, by then seriously ill due to jaw cancer.
When the second world war broke out, Freud opened the Hampstead War Nursery for children who had been left homeless, and often orphaned, as a result of the conflict. Her research into the impact of stress and separation on children was published along with Dorothy Burlingham.
After the nursery closed, Freud established the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic in 1952.
She continued to expand her writing, publishing “Normality and Pathology in Childhood” in 1965, which was to serve as a blueprint for the work she would undertake during the last part of her life.
In the 1970s she developed an interest in the difficulties suffered by emotionally deprived and disadvantaged children and continued to serve as director of the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic until her death in October 1982.

The Lizard Squad are up to their old tricks again as they have managed to take down Xbox Live for the time being.
The official Lizard Squad Twitter page sent out a simple message just saying: “Xbox Live #offline”.
If you visit Twitter right now, many people are moaning that Xbox Live is down right now for them. Gamers can only blame The Lizard Squad for this mess. These guys have been taking servers down since August of this year.
The Lizard Squad have been doing DDOS attacks on gaming servers for several months. Servers for PSN, Destiny and several EA games have been down thanks to this one group.
The Lizard Squad were quiet for a few weeks when Twitter suspended their account. They’ve created a new page and have started annoying gamers once again.
The Lizard Squad taking down Xbox Live was a “Christmas Present” to Microsoft the group said. They threatened this is just preparation for more things to come during the lead up to Christmas.
It will be annoying if PSN and Xbox Live goes down for Christmas during the days people have off from work or school. It looks like these guys don’t care. You better be prepared to play offline video games if these guys are still around…
Update: It appears Xbox Live is starting to come back online for some gamers. Still, The Lizard Squad have said more attacks are coming…

Apple Pay, meant to inject momentum into a fragmented market for the emerging mobile payments sector, has instead highlighted the squabbles between retailers and the banking and payments industry.
Since Apple Pay made its debut October 20 for US customers with the iPhone 6, several major retailers have said they would not use it.
That includes number one retail group Wal-Mart and the large pharmacy-retail group CVS, which has disabled payment terminals that could accept Apple Pay.
"You're never going to come up with anything as smooth (and) as easy as Apple Pay. But if you can't use it, you're going to use something else," said Avivah Litan, an analyst at Gartner who follows mobile payments.
Litan said a few retailers, such as McDonald's and Disney, like the system because it speeds transactions and "every fraction of a second goes to the bottom line."
But she noted that for most retailers, credit card fees simply are too high.
Apple Pay has aligned itself with major banks and payment processors Visa and MasterCard, which take a cut of every transaction, typically two to three percent.
Retailers, which often operate on razor-thin profit margins, would like to cut or eliminate those fees, and Apple Pay does nothing to change that system.
"Most of the merchants have been hungry for competition," Litan said.
Stuck in neutral
Gartner projects mobile payments will hit $721 billion around the world by 2017. But some estimates have been lowered recently amid squabbles over the type of technology used and payment structure.
Apple uses a "near field communication" or NFC chip, similar to that used by Google Wallet and Softcard, which has been slow to gain traction.
Although Apple has signed on most major US banks, Visa and MasterCard, and retailers like Macy's and Staples, many others are balking.
A coalition of merchants led by Wal-Mart, Target and Sears called MCX is promoting its own system called CurrentC, using a different technology, and importantly, allowing retailers to bypass credit cards and use direct bank debits with lower transaction costs.
Apple Pay "really falls short when it comes to merchant value proposition," said Litan.
Nitesh Patel, analyst with Strategy Analytics, said retailers are not necessarily targeting Apple but want "to avoid what they believe are excessive swipe fees and the cost of upgrading hardware and software to accept contactless payments."
But he added that if Apple Pay catches on, the retailers will be forced to go along.
Patel said, however, that if the retailer sector does not unify around the contactless system used by Apple Pay, users may revert to their old habits, "since they will need to carry their payment cards and wallet with them anyway."
"This is a challenge that all proponents of contactless payments, Google Wallet, Softcard and Apple Pay face together," Patel told AFP.
The merchant system got a black eye when it revealed a data breach exposing customer emails, even though the app itself was not affected.
Forrester Research analyst Denee Carrington said security is an advantage for Apple.
"Apple Pay is highly secure, and the data privacy will mean that merchants are less likely to be hacked since they won't have card payment data that hackers are interested in," she said.
"Apple Pay is also very fast and consumers seem to like it as well."
Battle for customer data
Bob O'Donnell at Technalysis Research said Apple's privacy protections make the system less attractive to retailers, because they cannot as easily track customer habits to deliver coupons or marketing messages.
"They want that data," O'Donnell said. "That's why the grocery stores give you the loyalty cards."
O'Donnell said Apple has created excitement about mobile payments but has failed to bridge the differences among the market players.
"It gives momentum to the sector but it remains fragmented," he said.
"Apple Pay provides an example of the promise and the challenges of mobile payments in a very clear way."
Litan said meanwhile that the squabbles could intensify. And she noted that retailers which are disabling the ability to use contactless NFC technology could also be blocking rival systems.
The merchant-sponsored system uses a more cumbersome technology that requires customers to scan a QR (quick response) code and display that. But by bypassing the credit card system, it can reduce costs for merchants, who may pass on these savings to customers.
"The merchant systems are never going to be as convenient as Apple's," Litan said.
"They can't compete with Apple on convenience but they can on price. It's going to boil down to price versus convenience, and price usually wins."

A Look at Project Ara
As mobile communication technology progresses, we find ourselves depending more and more on devices that seem to address our needs and wants so well that it’s as if these smartphone companies know each and every one of us personally. From basic calling and texting features, to harnessing the potential of mobile Internet connectivity, these pieces of technology now enable us to communicate on a global level, making us all a part of a worldwide community. With every new model that’s introduced, these smartphones are simply getting smarter, better, and more equipped to become the single most indispensable piece of technology in our lives.
Now, the continuous evolution of the smartphone introduces yet and another step towards the future with Project Ara, a modular smartphone that allows the user to upgrade only specific parts of the phone as opposed to having to buy and entirely new phone. The Project Ara phone essentially comprises of an endoskeleton with modules which could be filled by different components, such as the CPU, the camera, the storage device and other parts of the smartphone. While the concept of basically building your own smartphone might come off as complex, keep in mind that if you could build a house using Lego, you could definitely master using a mobile phone from Project Ara.
Mightbe that’s an overly simplified analogy of Project Ara, but a more pressing concern is if such a device is the way to go in terms of considering the next step in mobile communication. Looking at it on a purely conceptual level, the Project Ara has the potential to revolutionize how mobile phones are made and sold, and would definitely have smartphone giants like Apple and Samsung scrambling to counteract the movement. On the other hand, it might become just another good idea that doesn’t become anything more than that: an idea. Is Project Ara a good thing? Let’s take a look at a few important points of discussion.
Would the user experience improve or not?
As much as we might like to think we live in a technologically-savvy world, the majority of smartphone users are essentially casual users. With social media being the reason the majority of smartphone users are keeping their hands and eyes glued to their phones, one could easily question the need for giving consumers such a level of control with upgrading their devices, especially when most would be perfectly to just purchase the latest models available.
On the other hand, the argument about a new piece of technology alienating a generation of new users have been made before, and a lot of times, that argument has been proven wrong. And more than anything, the Project Ara provides something that a lot of other smartphones could no longer provide: novelty. That in itself makes for a great user experience, for at least a specific period of time.
How much would it cost?
Pricing would be a critical matter in the success of Project Ara. While the ability to only upgrade specific components of your smartphone might seem a cheaper alternative to purchasing an entirely new smartphone, if the price difference for the act of buying a new phone and buying certain parts, then switching to Project Ara might not be worthwhile. For users to fully appreciate the changes to the smartphone norm, it’s important to remember that people would probably be hesitant to spend their money on an unproven technology when a proven option is available for not so much more.
How would competitors respond?
Once Project Ara comes out, companies like Apple and Samsung and the other forerunners in the smartphone business are going to have to address this breakthrough. With Project Ara phones coming out next year, it’s very interesting to see how the big dogs are going to answer this obvious challenge to their smartphone supremacy. It’s an interesting thought to entertain—what with all the years that these top companies have dominated the field and in comes something new that not only disregards the standards set by these companies, but basically reinvents the smartphone into a package that seemingly is more convenient and cheaper. With a paradigm shift of this magnitude, it would be nice to see the eventual push in innovation that this specific situation dictates.
Would Motorola once again run with the big dogs?
Project Ara is a Motorola baby. Motorola, a mobile communications company that once competed with Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung and others have fallen on the wayside the moment smartphones became the norm. This move by Motorola could be considered somewhat overdue, but one couldnot deny that while the move might be a little late in the game, this move is still a definite game changer.
Would Project Ara breathe new life into the once titanic company? Also, what would be the ramifications if Project Ara results into nothing more but a passing trend (a distinct possibility considering the number of supposed innovations predicted to be the next big thing)? It’s hard not to admire Motorola for taking such a bold move. If the Project Ara does succeed, then Motorola would definitely make its mark once more in the mobile communications industry.
If it doesn’t succeed, who’s to blame?
There are many questions hanging when it comes to Project Ara. While this groundbreaking move by Motorola has people excited, it remains to be seen of the general public is excited enough to support the project and turn it into a success. If it does fail, and that obviously might be a premature topic for discussion, but if it does fail, then what could be the possible cause of that failure?
The product itself is one questionable factor. A modular phone is indeed a good idea, but not all good ideas translate well into reality. Also, how would Project Ara be marketed? Remember that while the top companies might have optimum projects, it’s marketing that keeps them afloat. In a world wherein people have mostly made their choice when it comes to their tech preferences, it’s difficult to foresee a scenario wherein Project Ara would succeed without an aggressive marketing campaign. And of course, there’s always us, the consumers. Are we ready for Project Ara?
Here’s one last look at the project
Whether or not Project Ara makes it or takes a backseat to the fact that innovation is once again at work. It’s nice to know that while we live in a world where we already believe are smartphones are the greatest things ever, here comes a product that could potentially show us more. There is nothing wrong with reinventing the wheel, and if Motorola’s bold move pays off, then they deserve every piece of success they get. Is Project Ara a good thing? Yes. Any product that aims to improve something that’s already great is always a good thing.

So before you switch on to the particular app at your regular timing, it will be ready with the feeds and updates for that app so that it can inform you. Now this is definitely multitasking with a pretty cooler and useful point of view for the user.

Google's Nexus 5 has nearly everything you would expect from a high-end smartphone, except the price. The Nexus 5 is a very well-rounded and feature-packed product - something that gives a solid Android phone. A 5-inch display offering 1920x1080 resolution IPS display, with 445 ppi, a Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.26GHz, support for 4G LTE networks, and a powerful Android 4.4 Kit Kat operating system, all makes a good smartphone that a true geek would demand. The premium Android handset is now available for Rs 28,999 for 16 GB model, while the 32GB model would cost Rs 32,999. Since the phone is designed by Google, you get pure Android experience, without clutter or gimmicks that many phone makers add to distinguish their phones from rivals.
On the other hand, the iPhone 5S is the best phone Apple has ever made. It's the top choice for anyone who wants a sleek and smart phone with formidable power and a high-resolution display. The 5s features a brand new A7 chip built on 64-bit architecture, making the iPhone the first smartphone ever to go 64-bit. Apple claims the 5S can deliver 56x faster graphics and 40x faster CPU as compared to the original iPhone. The new iPhone is certainly a must buy for those who want to use the best Apple has to offer – those who want to experience the Apple ecosystem and experience, especially those who own an iPhone 4 and older handsets.
Read on to find out the top five ways in which the Nexus 5 shows up its potential:
Larger display
The Nexus 5 comes with a 5-inch display that’s a big larger than the iPhone 5s’s 4-inch screen. The Nexus 5 has a 5-inch IPS LCD Gorilla Glass 3 display supporting Full HD 1080×1920 pixels and an astonishing 445ppi.
On the other hand, the iPhone 5S comes with a 4-inch Retina Display (IPS LCD), with 1136×640 resolution at 326ppi. The Nexus 5 is ahead here by a good margin. The difference is important to those users who want a larger displays for movies, games and general power userness.
NFC
For connectivity, the Nexus 5 includes dual-band 802.11ac WiFi, as well as Bluetooth 4.0, NFC (for Google Wallet and Android Beam), SlimPort, DLNA and USB OTG for accessing flash drives and using keyboards. Changes in Android 4.4 KitKat are going to open up the possibilities of using NFC payments through Google Wallet, but it may not go as far as we would hope. Google says “If you have a Nexus 5 device, you can now use Google Wallet to tap and pay in stores with any carrier.” If you are coming from another Nexus device and getting a Nexus 5, functionally nothing has changed in terms of Google Wallet NFC payments. In addition, NFC can also be used to share photos and other files with nearby users.
Faster processor and extra RAM
Equipped with the cutting-edge Snapdragon 800 chipset, the Nexus 5 gives a tough fight to iPhone 5S in the performance department. The Nexus 5 comes with an SoC that boasts a quad-core Krait 400 CPU, clocked at 2.3 GHz, as well as the powerful Adreno 330 GPU.
On the other hand, the iPhone 5s is powered by the A7 chipset, which is the first to adopt a 64-bit architecture. There’s also a dual-core Cyclone CPU inside that's ticking at a clock-rate of 1.3 GHz. Although there’s significant difference in terms of processing power, it’s worth nothing that when doing a cross-platform performance comparison, software optimizations hold equal weight. With that being said, the iPhone 5S is also a powerhouse in terms of speed, delivering great performance in terms of playing heavy games, web browsing and other multi-media stuff.
Not just in the processing speed, the Nexus 5 also offers a healthy 2 gigs of RAM, while the rival 5S comes with only 1 GB of RAM, which also guarantees a smooth experience. A 2 GB of RAM means no significant slow-down related to system memory. Internal storage configurations for the iPhone 5s are 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB, whereas the Nexus 5 comes with 16 GB or 32 GB memory.
Since, these smartphones don’t support microSD memory expansion, you need to carefully choose your smartphone variant.
Battery
The Nexus 5 has a non-expandable 2300 mAh battery which the company claims to offer a 17 hours talk time and 300h in stand-by. The iPhone 5S battery is just 1570 mAh which seems to be not enough for the hardcore users. However, Apple claims it to last 10 hours in talk time and 250 in stand-by with 3G on. The Nexus 5 still overcomes the iPhone 5S at this point.
Camera
Both these devices have 8MP cameras with 1080p video recording.
The Nexus 5 boasts optical image stabilisation however, which has proven itself in both the Nokia Lumia 1020 and LG G2 by producing clear shots with sharp details, even in low light conditions.

New App Update Allows Diners in Pittsburgh to Remotely Add Their Name to the Wait Lists of More Restaurants and Sync with Social Media Accounts
Pittsburgh, PA, November 21, 2013 - The restaurant seating management service NoWait today announces a new update to their local consumer dining app. The app, which allows diners to remotely search nearby restaurant waits and add their name to a wait list, now includes more restaurants, new sharing features and syncs with users Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Similar to check-ins on Foursquare, NoWait users can now let friends know when they've added their name to a restaurant wait list by turning on the Facebook sharing feature, which will post where youre waiting in line. The apps new Facebook integration features will also allow users to invite friends to download the app through Facebook and Twitter. If desired, users can also turn on a setting that will send push notifications when new nearby restaurants have started using NoWait.
First launched in September, NoWaits consumer dining app is the first of its kind, allowing users to directly connect and communicate with restaurants in a new, more direct way. In addition to the ability to search wait times of nearby restaurants and remotely add a name to the wait list, NoWaits consumer app allows diners to view and track their overall plan in the line and communicate with the restaurant through their cell phones. NoWait is planning on a wider roll out of the consumer app to cities across the country in 2014.
Our consumer app offers a service unlike any other currently available, and with the addition of social media integration, were continuing to build a new channel for restaurants and consumers to connect, said NoWait CEO Ware Sykes. This local app is a model for what we soon plan to roll out across the country.
Since its initial roll out in Pittsburgh, NoWaits dining app has maintained a 97% approval rating among users, and the app has decreased the time diners spend waiting in restaurants from up to 90 minutes down to 5 minutes.
Restaurants have been equally pleased, with many remarking that their dining service is more efficient and that their customers happier. At first, we were a bit nervous to use NoWait, thinking that we would be losing control over our wait lists, but we found that the app was far better than we were at quickly and efficiently seating customers, said Jimmie Kuhl of Burgatory Bar in Pittsburgh, PA.
NoWaits consumer app is an extension of the companys app for restaurants, which is used in thousands of restaurants across the U.S. from major chains like Chilis and TGI Fridays to popular independent hot spots like Iron Chef Jose Garces Village Whiskey in Philadelphia and Hubert Kellers Burger Bar in Las Vegas. The app has currently seated more than 21 million diners across the country.
NoWaits consumer dining app update will be available for download in the App sore on Tuesday, Nov. 26 here(https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nowait-restaurant-guide-wait/id691617940).

ZendCon Europe Conference, Paris, France - Building on the announcement of the Zend Blueprint for Continuous Delivery, Zend today announced a new version of Zend Server with strengthened capabilities for infrastructure and release automation.
Zend Server is the platform at the core of the Zend Blueprint for Continuous Delivery, and provides consistency, automation and collaboration capabilities to each stage of bringing applications from code to production. The Blueprint provides practical best practices to help companies implement each step of the Continuous Delivery cycle, and includes both the Zend Server platform and a set of patterns that codify best practices for Continuous Integration, Release Automation, Infrastructure Automation and Application Management.
Enhanced Infrastructure Automation
The intelligent provisioning of infrastructure is a vital aspect of Continuous Delivery. Zend Server provides infrastructure automation through automatic provisioning and configuration control for PHP applications, as well as elastic scaling for cloud-based apps.
Zend Server 6.2 has enhanced the application deployment automation workflow by providing the ability to manage and provision virtual host configurations cluster-wide, including specialized support for secure (SSL-based) configurations. As new servers are provisioned, they automatically receive the proper virtual host configuration, and any changes are automatically distributed across the cluster. This removes manual steps from these workflows and provides an additional degree of automation.
“Hosting more than one web site on a server instance is a common use case for our clients,” said Zend Co-Founder and CTO Zeev Suraski. “With version 6.2, we’ve are bringing Zend Server’s powerful automation and synchronization features to the world of Apache virtual hosts and Nginx server blocks.”
Optimized Release Automation
As a platform for Continuous Delivery, Zend Server provides automated deployment capabilities for PHP applications. These include the ability to automatically deploy apps to a cluster of servers, validate dependencies and use rapid, automated version rollback when needed. In addition, Zend Server now provides the ability to maintain multiple versions of a library on a server, so that different apps with different needs can use them without conflicting.
Abstracting reusable code into libraries is a best practice for application design, but also brings with it the problem of ensuring libraries are up to date and standardized across the cluster. The library management capabilities in Zend Server 6.2 help prevent application errors stemming from library version mismatch or being out of sync across a cluster. With version 6.2, Zend Server’s library management capabilities are further strengthened and now allow the option for new libraries to be automatically updated.
These capabilities add to the library of patterns and best practices that Zend has already published as part of its Blueprint for Continuous Delivery, which is available at Zend Server 6.2 can be downloaded today at www.zend.com/blueprint. Patterns and plug-ins easily integrate Zend Server with the most popular Continuous Integration, infrastructure automation and monitoring software. Zend has already published patterns for Continuous Integration with Jenkins, Infrastructure Automation with Chef, shell scripts, and VMware vCloud Automation Center; and for monitoring with Nagios. A set of SDKs is available to enable further custom integrations with any existing Continuous Integration or automation software or process.
Zend welcomes contributions both to the blueprint which can be accessed at GitHub.
Zend Server 6.2 can be downloaded today at www.zend.com/server.

Experts reveal the coolest technology features that offer the most convenience and value for car shoppers
Advanced technology options are becoming increasingly important to today's new car shoppers. According to AutoTrader.com®'s recent Millennial Study, 73% of young Millennials (age 16-24) say a car must have infotainment technology in order for them to consider it. And the phenomenon isn't limited to younger shoppers – a high percentage of Baby Boomers – 61% - feel the same way.
In tandem with the Connected Car Expo at the LA Auto Show, AutoTrader.com's editorial team is announcing their picks of the "Must-Have Automotive Technology" for 2014. The features and options selected represent a blend of innovation, ease-of-use and value that AutoTrader.com experts say consumers should consider when shopping for their next new car.
"Today's cars are packed with a wide variety of high-tech features, so it can be tough for car shoppers to discern which options are worth having versus which ones may just look cool," AutoTrader.com Site Editor, Brian Moody said. "We created this list to inform car shoppers about which features will actually be useful on a regular basis and are worth paying a little extra for."
Some of the features AutoTrader.com experts recommend include:
Bluetooth Audio
Leveraging the same Bluetooth technology that lets a mobile phone operate wirelessly through the car's audio system, Bluetooth Audio takes it one step further to project all of the audio from a smartphone through the speakers. This means in addition to hands-free calling, consumers can play music stored on their device or streamed from their favorite music app, or even hear turn-by-turn directions from their smartphone's mapping apps.
"Bluetooth audio is an important distinction from phone-only Bluetooth," Moody said. "It might not always be obvious which function a vehicle has, so shoppers should be sure to ask. It's fairly widely available on 2014 models, and is one of those features many people will use nearly every time they're in the car."
Smartphone App Integration
While Bluetooth Audio allows consumers to wirelessly hear music and voice from their smartphone though the car's speakers, full app integration allows the ability to control an app's functions through an interface on the vehicle. For example, with Bluetooth Audio, drivers would still have to use the app on their smartphone to do things like skip a song or search for an artist. But with integration, all functions in the app can be controlled directly on vehicle's infotainment or navigation screen.
"This functionality used to be only offered on premium vehicles, but now it's becoming more prevalent in mainstream cars, for example, the new 2014 Toyota Corolla and Honda Accord both offer it." Moody said. "It's also not just limited to music – some cars offer apps that allow you to check movie times or make dinner reservations, all from the car's central display."
Active Driving Aids
Consumers may be familiar with audible alerts that warn drivers of things like an object behind the car when backing up or when another car is in a driver's blind spot. But for 2014, AutoTrader.com editors are seeing more cars with "active" driving aids that can automatically apply steering, throttle and/or brake inputs to prevent drivers from hitting an object behind them or to keep the car in its proper lane.
"This is the kind of technology that goes beyond cool and interesting - these advancements are what will have the greatest positive impact for everyone on the road. Now these features are most common on luxury vehicles or as part of a premium safety package, but we anticipate, like most other new technology, it will eventually start to come down in price and become more common. For shoppers who have room in their budgets, this technology is definitely worth the investment."
Other features AutoTrader.com experts recommend include text-to-speech reading, the ability to "favorite" certain functions in GM's CUE, MyLink and IntelliLink systems, mobile Wi-Fi and seat comfort technology.
