The world is innovating! And what comes first to the mind is how science is improving every aspect of our lives. The beauty front has not stayed away from the touch of science. The quest for beauty is an age-old concept. The difference in the two eras is highlighted by the different methods we used to remove the stumbling block restricting one’s appearance, writes Dr. Geetanjali Nandini, Cosmetologist & Dermatologist, Skin Nirvana Clinic, Mumbai.

The big brains are trying to process methods which will require less human efforts and at the same time ensure results’ guarantee. What is it that cannot be cured? We have solutions for almost everything. Can’t you delay the signs of ageing? You can. Restylane fillers and skin boosters seem like a blessing of scientific interventions. These methods are well tried and tested by new age technology researchers to relieve people of all the skin woes.

While fillers range is designed to add volume to the facial features, skin boosters hydrate the skin from inside to treat the overall problems related to skin. They can be used to give pout to lips and redefine them. They help provide volume to sagging cheeks and remove fine lines and wrinkles away. Restylane skin boosters work effectively on exposed skin areas such as neck, hands and skin scarred because of severe acne.

An added advantage to the usage of dermal fillers and skin boosters is the procedural ease and the long lasting flawless skin features they gift you with. In comparison to professionals offering topical facials and massages, skin boosters take lesser time to improve skin texture and also the effects last for longer --  for over a year. The time investment required for the skin treatment depends majorly on what type of procedure suits the best to cure your skin trouble. Generally, the estimated time taken for a procedure is about 15-20 minutes for a session.

The popularity of such treatments is rising. To begin using dermal fillers, 20s is the suitable age. Any dip in glow and youthful sheen often leaves youngsters, especially girls, worrying about their appearance and scouring for distinguished skin treatments. The benefits of effective fillers and skin boosters’ usage have not attracted only women, but also grabbed the attention of men. Men are amongst the beneficiaries who undergo the less time consuming sessions with the added advantage of less or almost no pain.

They are non-surgical methods requiring no loaded check list of the pre-operative and post-operative precautions to keep in mind. When compared to the complex cosmetic surgeries for skin improvement and facial readjustments, these treatments are a hit among people because of the successful results. The demand graph of these products is continuously rising to new heights because of the success ratio achieved.

Restylane is non-animal sourced acid-based dermal filler. It is a natural constituent of our skin which depletes due to various factors. Restylane absorbs water and provides firmness and hydration to the skin. Restylane fillers contain different quantities of the Hyaluronic acid that cures growing skin roughness and blotchiness. Ageing ages your skin in a way that it starts to home fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, loosened skin, saggy cheeks and smile lines. And these ageing results combine with other unwanted skin issues like skin harm caused due to UV rays resulting in edema, pain, blistering, tanning and peeling of the skin.

•    The campaign initiated on World Heart Day, aimed at spreading awareness about heart healthy lifestyles

•    The painting competition concludes on October 12 with an exhibition of the best works and ‘Heart Talk’ by a Cardiologist

Gurgaon, Oct 12, 2014: Columbia Asia Hospitals, Gurgaon today concluded its creative campaign to generate awareness about heart healthy lifestyles, with a colorful exhibition of paintings submitted by people from across the city on the theme of cardiovascular health.

Art for Heart”, was a unique campaign initiated by the Hospital ahead of World Heart Day to encourage people with a penchant for the brush to draw a piece of art that stimulates thinking and awareness about heart health.

With the hospital receiving scores of entries of drawings, paintings, and sketches on the ‘art theme’ 'Keeping your Heart Healthy', its premises will play host to as many as 80 of the best selected art works among them.

The exhibition held today displayed 200 paintings submitted by the people, from which a panel of five judges selected the best art-works. On the exhibition day, the hospital also held an in-house programme that included a ‘Heart Talk’ a by senior cardiologist, an Active Lifestyle Workshop, a Healthy Cooking Workshop, as well as a workshop on Basic Life Saving Skills.

Basic Life Saving Skills include techniques of emergency response to revive victims of heart attack, strokes or accidents with measures like Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Cardiovascular disease has emerged as one of the leading causes of deaths in India in recent years. As Indians adopt unhealthy western lifestyles, with increasing intake of saturated fat, dependence on tobacco and alcohol, and absence of physical activity, the number of cardiac patients is set to grow dramatically.

According to a study supported by ASSOCHAM in 2010, India was projected to lose USD 236.6 billion because of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, in the decade between 2005 and 2015. Columbia Asia Hospitals, Gurgaon launched this uniquely creative campaign to exhort people to pay attention to their heart this World Heart Day, which was on September 29.

“We often tend to overlook monotonous messages of drab awareness campaigns that tell us that cardiovascular disease is taking epidemic proportions in India. But, art is something that is subtle and attracts attention without being boisterous. It compels our inner faculties to think and internalize a message without sounding like a campaign message. ‘Art for Heart’ was a campaign that aimed to invigorate creative thinking to help us drive home the point that maintaining heart health at both individual and societal levels is extremely important today,” says Dr Anil Bansal, Chief Cardiologist, Columbia Asia Hospital, Gurgaon.

The aim of this elaborate campaign was to draw people’s attention to the growing threat of cardiovascular diseases in India, and their early onset in young people due to lifestyle falws.

“Cardiovascular diseases are already among the leading causes of deaths in India after communicable diseases. As our population ages, we will soon have a ‘nation-sized’ group of people suffering from cardiac diseases. However, we know the risk factors that lead to heart disease and if we inform and educate the masses well about the need and mechanisms of leading a ‘heart-healthy’ life, we can stave off the impending crisis. Even a simple lifestyle modification involving 30 minutes of exercise daily can reduce the threat of cardiac disease in an individual,” says Dr Bansal.

Dr Ranjan Upadhyaya, Dermatologist, Desmoderm skin clinic, Delhi

It is a centuries-old tradition of decking up your hands with patterns of deftly crafted artistic designs but it never fails to excite. The sight of a henna cone is always attractive for a woman and festivals are just the right excuse to display your beautifully patterned hands.

While you do everything to make sure your henna color turns out to be the darkest -- applying clove oil and lemon –what about the hands themselves? Why not make your hands the most beautiful part of your body before colored patterns leave them all the more striking.
Mostly for women, their face their only skincare focus with all their beauty regimen revolving around it. No wonder, hands often become the most prominent giveaways when it comes to betraying your age or displaying the damage caused on skin due to daily wear and tear.
The hands are parts of the body that we expose to a lot of wear and tear, by frequent use of soap & detergents and exposing to sun light. These stresses contribute to skin dryness when the natural fat in the skin barrier is diminished. And while we take care of the needs of our face, we only seldom extend our regimen to the hands.
This year, as you gear up to celebrate Navratri, get all decked up in a lehnga- chunni with henna on your palms, and dance to the tunes of Garba and Dandiya, make sure your hands look beautiful like never before. A session with Restylane Vital skinboosters can give perfect beauty radiance to your hands.
“Women often come to us expressing displeasure at the way their hands look. Even when their faces are radiant as ever, their hands would look dull, pale and wrinkled with veins protruding out. While a regular regime of manicure would be needed every two months and would consume time, a brief session with Restylane Vital skinboosters would give wonderful results, replenishing the lost beauty of the hands from within. What more, the impact of the procedure lasts for almost a year.
Using microinjections, stabilized hyaluronic acid is implanted into the outer layers of the skin and works naturally to hydrate the skin from within. Restylane Vital Skinboosters is a new age therapy that moisturizes the skin from within and replenished the lost reserves of moisture as hyaluronic acid is a hydrophilic substance that attracts water and helps retain moisture into the skin. This not only makes the hands look younger, but also more beautiful and bright. It diminishes appearance of veins, improves skin tone and luster, restores hydrobalance and increases skin elasticity.
Experts say men and women often ignore their hands and neck, when it comes to their beauty regimes. Often we even fail to follow the basic minimum routine of moisturizer and sunscreen when it comes to hands.

The skin on the back of your hands is different from the skin in the palm of your hands. There are no hair follicles in the palm of your hands and the skin is thicker, which makes the skin on the underside more resistant to wear and tear. However, this is not so for the back of the hands, which start looking aged and wrinkled earlier.

“As the trend of looking young and beautiful spreads, women today are inarguably becoming more concerned about their hands. Some are extremely particular about ensuring regular manicure routines to push the signs of ageing, others are open to cosmetic procedures to reverse the signs. Unlike the face, making hands look younger is more difficult given the thinness of the skin at the back of the hands. However, a session with Restylane Vital can drastically change the way your hands look. Especially when you are preparing to flaunt a beautiful finger ring or henna.

When used on the face, Restylane Vital can bring your lost glow back and give your skin a perfect hydrated look. The loss of hyaluronic acid is one of the most important causes of wear and tear and lack of elasticity that our skin shows. Once replenished into the skin, it works just the way it would work naturally to bring glow and radiance back to your face.

•    Modern day dermal fillers like Restylane Vital provide instant glow and are long-lasting

New Delhi, July, 2014: July, it is that time of the year when students are dying to start college. Twelfth pass-outs couldn’t stop shopping -- buying clothes, funky bags, purses, gadgets which they can flaunt on the first day of their college. Everybody knows ‘first impression is the last impression’ and students do not want to leave anything to chance.

Looking their best during the starting few days college to garner maximum eyeballs is students’ first priority. But it is not just the gadgets or the purse or the branded clothes that make them look good. A good, shining skin compliments every other thing. No matter how expensive clothes you wear, if the skin is dull, the whole look gets spoiled. The students know fact very well.

And so be it girls or boys, students of both genders are spending good amount of time to improve their skin tone, making it look bright and vibrant. They can be seen making multiple visits to parlours and buying a variety of creams and masks, for the sake of glowing skin. How much that glow important is evident from the same.

But no matter what you have been doing to get the ‘ultimate glow’ on your face, the exhaustion of board exams’ preparation is still visible on your face, making it look dull and lifeless. The rigor of studies that made you fetch good marks in your board exams is apparent on your face and you are not able to get rid of it. You have tried all the alternatives, experimented with all the home remedies, but the shine has been ditching you.

“If you are encountering the same situation, then relax! To get a glowing face, you only need to visit your dermatologist and go for a session of Retylane Vital. The dermal filler will get you your desired glow in no time. Many students have been coming to me for the session,” said Dr Deepali Bhardwaj, Dermatologist, Dr. Deepali's Skin Clinic, Delhi.

The modern day dermal filler -- Restylane Vital -- does the wonder in just some minutes and in a very simple way. What more! This is not an effect that would last a few days. The glow and softness that come with the hydrophilic hyaluronic acid (that promotes water retention and absorption) stays for up to a year. So you would not need to worry about visiting the parlour again and again and spare that time in making new friends or having fun.

When injected into the upper layers of the skin, Restylane Vital deeply hydrates and nourishes it. Hyaluronic acid gel is implanted into the outer layers of the skin using microinjections and it works naturally to hydrate the skin from within, making the skin glow.

“The procedure helps the skin to look more radiant. With the help of dermal fillers, you can even highlight your facial features, augmenting your lips to even cheeks,” says Dr Sachin Dhawan, Dermatologist, SkinSmile Clinic, Gurgaon.

So when on the first day of college your seniors ask the secret behind your shiny and glowy look, share with them the million-dollar answer. You will definitely end up ruling their hearts.

Passing out in most of the cases is related to heart rhythm disorder instead of any brain dysfunctioning, writes Dr Vanita Arora, Associate Director & Head, Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab and Arrhythmia Services, Max Hospital, Saket

Fainting followed by blurring of vision, black out, light-headedness, feeling of nausea, dizziness should not be passed off as just a mere normal occurrence as all this may be a warning sign of a serious heart ailment. Dizziness is normal after strenuous work but fainting coupled with these signs is abnormal and warrant some seriousness if you are ignoring it.

Fainting or Syncope, as known in medical terms, is loss of consciousness. A person who has fainting spells returns to full consciousness, but has no inkling of having lost it in the first place. The bout of fainting happens when the blood supply to the brain is hampered. The interruption in oxygen supply to brain happens due to low blood pressure, the result of which is less availability of blood to the brain as the heart is unable to pump blood.

There could be many reasons for fainting or passing out. Anemia, low blood sugar, metabolic disorders, improper blood circulation are some of the reasons behind fainting spells. While fainting as such is not a cause to press the panic button, falling after passing out can cause severe injuries, especially to the head which is a very sensitive area.

While some fainting spells do not pose major risk to the body, most of the cases are related to a heart problem. If fainting happens due to irregular heart rhythms -- Arrhythmia, then it should not be ignored and a medical advise must be sought at the earliest. Reasons for a fainting spell can come to the fore only after a proper diagnosis by the doctor, so in any case a visit to the doctor is necessary.

Fainting is serious if:

•    It takes place while doing exercise, driving or during a rigorous activity
•    There is a numbness in the body
•    There is shortness of breath
•    There is a chest pain
•    It happens for a short span
•    If there is tingling in one part of the body

Triggers for fainting:

•    Suddenly standing up or Standing up for a long time
•    Emotional turmoil
•    Incessant coughing
•    Non-prescribed medication
•    Loss of body fluid
•    Fear or sudden scare

Arrhythmia is the major cause of fainting or syncope. There are two major conditions associated with Arrhythmia – bradycardia and tachycardia. When hearbeat is too fast, it is bradycardia; while it is known as tachycardia when the situation is just the contrary.

During tachycardia, the heart beats too fast giving considerably less time to the heart to fill blood after each heat beat. This blocks adequate supply of blood to different parts of the body. In bradycardia, the heart rate is too slow to pump enough blood to the body parts. As in both the conditions, the supply to brain is interrupted, the outcome is fainting.

Precautions to be taken:

•    Do not stand for a long time. Keep moving
•    If you have been sitting, then get up slowly
•    After a fainting spell, relax for a while
•    Immediately sit if you have blurred vision
•    Look for a safer place to sit
•    During dehydration, increase intake of fluids

Visiting a doctor is imminent in case of any kind of fainting as only it will underline the trigger for such spells. If fainting is related to heart rhythm irregularity, doctors can gauge the same through regular monitoring and suggest a treatment plan which could involve implantation of devices like pacemakers or defibrillators.

New Delhi May 2014- Despite struggling with diseased joints and restricted motion, many people often feel intimidated by the idea of a joint replacement surgery because they believe it will have painful after-effects and will not be sustainable. This apprehension, however, is unfounded.

With the advent of minimally invasive joint replacement procedures, it is possible for doctors to conduct surgical intervention through just one or two small incisions. This not only makes the post operative time much less painful for patients but also ensures a faster rehabilitation as compared to traditional joint replacement surgery to replace a diseased or a damaged joint.

As compared to traditional joint replacement surgery, the minimally invasive approach ensures a better long-term stability of the joint because the muscles and tendons around the joint are not damaged during this surgery.

In a hip replacement surgery, a doctor removes the head of the thighbone and then places artificial implants to replace the faulty ball and socket of the hip that have been causing problems and restricting movement. The artificial implants will relieve the patient of the constant pain that he or she lives with and also improve mobility remarkably. You will be able to lead a much normal life, walk, climb stairs, stand up from a chair without much problem and have much better quality of life.

“In a minimally invasive hip replacement procedure, a smaller incision 3-6 inches, as compared to 10 inches in the traditional method is made and special instruments are used to insert an artificial implant. This results in less damage to the muscle and tissue surrounding the area, lesser blood loss and a faster return to normal life. The most important advantage of this procedure is that the major muscles in the hip and thigh area that give support to the joint are not cut.

This not only speeds up recovery but also reduces the risk of dislocation of the replaced joint as the muscles around it are strong and functioning” says Dr.Rajeev K Sharma,Orthopedic & Joint Replacement Surgeon,Indraprastha Apollo Hospita, New Delhi.

Most patients are able to walk a day after the surgery and put their weight on the artificial implant. With the wound needing healing much smaller, they are able to start physiotherapy very soon after the procedure and the hospital stay is much shorter.

55-year-old Sanjoy (not his original name) developed arthritis of the joints at an early stage and required a hip replacement. However, he believed he was too young to go for a joint replacement and felt the surgery would be painful and his active lifestyle will be compromised.

However, a day after the surgery, he was on his feet. On the third day, he was walking around without any support. A few months after the minimally invasive procedure, he is leading a perfectly normal life. With the diseases hip joint replaced, his mobility restored and quality of life improved.
This procedure is particularly more suitable for younger patients who have more active lifestyles and need greater strength to their joints for a longer period of time. This may cut the need for a revision surgery. It is also good for patients in whom a major surgery can be risky.

Prolonged restricted movements, apart from deteriorating quality of life and productivity, may also lead to other health complications like obesity, diabetes and cardiac ailments. Hence, it is advisable to patients rendered increasingly immobile due to arthritis or other joint diseases to go for a joint replacement.

In the case of knee replacement too, new techniques for opening the knee have improved the quality if surgery in recent years. The latest techniques help protect the crucial tendons and muscles around the knee for better post operative recovery and long term stability of the artificial joint.

So, if a damaged or diseased joint is preventing you from leading a normal life, restricting you to home and cutting your mobility, do not hesitate from a joint replacement. The minimal approach is almost painless and faster healing.

•    A lot of men these days visit dermatology clinics to get their facial hair reduced and groomed to give a desired and sizzling look to their beard

It’s an age of the metrosexual man. The man who doesn’t mind spending a few hours and some  money on augmenting his beauty. Chiseled like a Greek God, when superstars like Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan flaunt their hairless chests with gusto, you know that the concept of beauty has redefined itself for men.

Body hair is no longer a macho thing. So, if you still think that going in for a permanent body hair removal would make you appear effeminate, you need a perception overhaul. Laser hair removal is no longer just for girls. More and more men too are opting for it.

In fact, today they are using it as a grooming method to chose where they want hair and where they do not. Beard grooming is one such procedure that has caught up in men. This helps them give a refined and attractive shape to their beard while removing excess facial hair.

At our clinic we have been performing laser hair removal since 14 years. While this was not readily acceptable 8-10 years back, today the procedure has gained much acceptance.

There has also been a tremendous increase in the number of men visiting us for laser hair removal. Eight years back if it was 2 men in every 10 people we treated, today it is 4-5. The procedures are no longer considered a taboo for men and they are just fine with getting what they desire.

Most men come asking for a chest and back clean up. Arms and legs are not areas men desire hair to be removed from.

Upper beard removal is another trend that is becoming common.

Beard shaping and eye brow shaping is done subtly so as to give it a beautifully groomed yet natural appearance.

Some people have a lot of facial hair, so for them we remove excess hair without actually removing the entire beard. So it will not appear that they have undergone a procedure, but their beard will look extremely well groomed.

Removing excess hair from forehead is another procedure that gives a neat look and men look forward to it.

In fact, the entire procedure of laser hair removal has become much more acceptable among people – both men and women – over the past few years.

Today, even teenagers are coming in to get a body hair removal done to get rid of the need for waxing once and for all.

Bleach is passé, today not many people like to get their facial hair bleached like they used to do earlier. And why would they, when they have a better and safe option in laser hair removal.

Enhance your face with Juvederm XC filler and turn Back the Clock the comfortable way

By Dr. Chytra V Anand, Cosmetic Dermatologist, Kosmoderma Clinics, Bangalore

Ouch…that hurts! Remember saying this to your beautician, bent diligently on you to mend you unruly eyebrows or wax your arms? Then, imagine the ache and discomfort one might have to undergo while undertaking a cosmetic makeover; one that involves going under the doctor’s knife?

Even if there is no knife, just a jab that you would like to take in order to beautify your visage…you will indeed feel the prick (and the agony). The measures we take to look good and our most beautiful, both surgical and non-surgical, often come supplemented with initial discomfort. All we do, while attempting any nip and tuck procedure or beauty injection(s), is to continuously remind our brain ‘there’s no gain without pain’. Isn’t it?

But now you can get ‘beautiful gains’ without the fear of pain! Astonishing as this might sound to your ears but it is true that modern-day dermal filler such as Juvederm XC is indeed a more comfortable option available to those seeking aesthetic enhancement. Unlike fillers of yesteryears, Juvederm XC comes in a composition that contains preservative-free Lidocaine (anesthetic) along with the major constituent – hyaluronic acid. The latter is a natural skin component responsible for maintaining the skin volume and hence the bountiful and youthful radiance.

Most people are desirous of good looks yet they are ‘needle phobic’ and get panicky at the mere thought of a needle pricking their delicate facial skin. Hence, they get frustrated out of their unfulfilled wish of looking their best even in an advancing age.  With Juvederm XC, however, the injection experience is extremely comfortable. Hence one feels almost no discomfort and yet attains youthful features.

This unique dermal filler can smoothly erase glabellar lines, forehead lines and naso-labial folds (deep lines around the nose that reach up to lips). Being US-FDA approved, not only does it acts as your tool against the ageing effects but also helps in enhancing your facial features. For example, if you are among those countless young women desiring a pout a la Hollywood hottie Angelina Jolie then, this new dermal filler comes handy. It effectively and painlessly plumps up your lip size thereby giving them a volume boost and renewed shape.

Besides lip size, another prominent concern among ladies is the shape of their nose. Being central in position, our nose, draws a lot of attention from onlookers. Unfortunately if its shape is not well defined then, the overall appeal of the face goes for a toss. This results in a lot of depression and low self-esteem among people with such a nose. However, this nouveau dermal filler can also be used in leveling an uneven nasal bridge, giving one a more pleasant appearance. There are other indications as well for which this filler can be used such as cheek augmentation, chin correction, defining jaw-line and rejuvenation of hands.

The filler offers soft and natural looks.  It is minimally invasive and gives long-lasting results in just one session. The beauty of dermal filler being the appearance of desired result almost instantaneously! Being a lunch-time procedure, there is no downtime involved. All one has to do is just walk in the clinic, get injected and walk out with transformed and aesthetically alluring looks. However, it is essential to choose the right person (an experienced doctor) for the treatment.

So, if the fear of pain is hindering your chances of a beautiful makeover then its time you consider your choice of dermal filler, for with XC beauty hurts are a thing of past!

New Delhi, April 25, 2014: Rajendra Tolani, 65, was hospitalized after he was found unconscious in his office by his son, Kapil, who panicked thinking he might have had suffered a heart attack. In hospital, doctors conveyed him that his father had a sudden cardiac arrest. Not knowing much about it, what he still told to the family members was that it was a heart attack.

Kapil is at no fault here. There are many like him who do not understand the difference between heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest. They take both these as one and the same thing, when it is not. In case of heart attack, there is a blockage in artery due to which the flow of oxygen-rich blood gets halted. While, sudden cardiac arrest happens when heart suddenly stops beating on account of malfunction in electrical impulses.

“Due to fat and plaque deposition in the heart’s artery, a blockage starts developing, which hampers the blood blow. On being completely blocked, it triggers a heart attack. While irregular heartbeats, known as arrhythmia, which when not treated leads to sudden cardiac arrest. Simply, heart attack takes place due to ‘circulation’ malfunction, while sudden cardiac arrest happens on account of ‘electrical’ malfunction in the heart,” says Dr Vanita Arora, Associate Director & Head, Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab and Arrhythmia Services, Max Hospital, Saket

Human heart is an important organ in a human body and acts like a pump. It supplies oxygen-rich blood to every cell of the body. The heart has four chambers -- two smaller, upper chambers called the right and left atria. Below them are two larger, lower chambers called the right and left ventricles. Through powerful contractions, or simply put heartbeats, these chambers constantly pump oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the entire body. The heart’s continuous contraction happens due to its own electrical conduction system.

The most common trigger of Sudden Cardiac Arrest is ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation.

Sudden cardiac arrest is related to Arrhythmia, which is heart rhythm disorder. Abnormally slow heart rhythms (usually rates may be abnormally slow or below 50 beats per minute) are known as Bradycardia, while abnormally fast heart rates (usually 150 or more beats per minute) are known as Tachycardia. Irregular fast heartbeats in the ventricles are called ventricular tachycardia. When the ventricles start fluttering or quivering, the condition is called ventricular fibrillation.

Due to ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation, the blood flow to the brain gets reduced, leading to immediate loss of consciousness and death.

Symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest and treatment

Though Sudden Cardiac Arrest happens often without any warning, there are some symptoms which can ring a warning bell:

·         Fainting intermittently

·         Sudden collapse

·         Blackouts

·         Dizziness

·         Loss of consciousness

·         Shortness of breath

·         Chest pain

·         Palpitations and vomiting

·         Fatigue and weakness

A person can be treated with a bypass surgery or angioplasty after a heart attack, while in case of arrhythmias the condition can be cured with implantation of implantation of pacemaker devices, including Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). It is also treated through radiofrequency ablation, in which the doctors burn the points from where irregular beats originate.

•    Accelerated bone loss after menopause is a major cause of osteoporosis in women, and preventive action is the only recourse, says Dr Rajeev K Sharma leading orthopaedic specialist and joint replacement surgeon

New Delhi, April, 2014: Osteoporosis is a disorder characterized by depleted bones that make you more prone to fractures and injuries. It is also a characteristic that runs parallel to a person’s age and inflicts more women than men. This is why women need to invest in bone health from early on in their lives.

The process called ageing brings in its wake a series of changes in the body. As we grow wiser, we also realize that our body that was once at our command will not be so all our lives. As muscles weaken, eyes give in, hair turns grey and skin loses its sheen, you know they are telling you that they have withered a lot. So are your bones. Bone mass or density is lost as we age. This happens in both men and women but it especially aggravates in women after menopause.

“As a part of ageing processes both men and women lose their bone density by 0.3% to 0.5% after the age of 35 yrs. In women estrogen (a hormone) is important in maintaining bone density. When estrogen levels drop after menopause, the loss of bone density accelerates. Deficiency of calcium and vitamin D can aggravate osteoporosis, though it is not the main and only cause,” says Dr Rajeev K Sharma, leading Orthopedic Specialist and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Delhi.

The bones lose calcium, vitamin D and other minerals and start losing their density. In extreme cases they become abnormally porous and fragile and extremely susceptible to fractures. This extreme condition is often described as Osteoporosis and can become a dangerous part of the lives of many an elderly. This is why we hear about so many hip, knee and shoulder fractures in older people. It is hence important to understand the way the condition works and aggravates.

According to estimates, as many as 25 million Indians are likely affected by osteoporosis. In fact, in India osteoporotic fractures may be occurring at a younger age than in the West. Recent research and studies have pointed out to the widespread vitamin D deficiency across India. The high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is a major factor in the poor bone health of Indians. Poor sunlight exposure and a vitamin D-deficient diet are some obvious causes.

“The bad news is that osteoporosis will be present in human body without any symptoms for decades and it doesn't cause symptoms until the bones start fracturing. Moreover, some osteoporotic fractures may escape detection for years when they do not cause symptoms. Hence, the patients may not be aware of their osteoporosis problem until they suffer a painful fracture. Depending on the location of fracture the symptoms differ but the usual symptom is pain and disability,” says Dr Sharma.

During the first five to 10 years after menopause, women can suffer up to 2%-4% loss of bone density per year! This can result in the loss of up to 25%-30% of their bone density during that time. Accelerated bone loss after menopause is a major cause of osteoporosis in women. Hormone replacement therapy post-menopause prevents this loss, but is of no major help once the window period of six years post-menopause is over.

Risk factors

•    Cigarette smoking
•    Alcohol consumption.
•    Poor nutrition and a diet low on calcium and vitamin D
•    Low estrogen levels
•    Chemotherapy that can cause early menopause due to its toxic effects on the ovaries.
•    Loss of menstrual period in young women (Amenorrhea) and it can occur in women who undergo extremely vigorous exercise training or with very low body fat, e.g, women with anorexia nervosa.
•    Rheumatoid arthritis or liver diseases
•    Immobility, such as after a stroke or from any condition that interferes with walking.
•    Hyperthyroidis or the problem of excessive sweating
•    Long-term use of anti-seizure medications and long-term use of oral steroids.

Prevention

The age old adage that prevention is better than cure holds 100 per cent in the case of osteoporosis. In fact, the only way to prevent osteoporosis is to start working with your bones when they are still young. Do not let bone loss to set in early by faulty practices.

•    Eat calcium rich diet
•    Ensure adequate exposure to the sun for vitamin D
•    Get a routine bone density check-up after the age of 35
•    Exercise to strengthen the bone
•    Quit smoking and alcohol
