Medical imaging expert Barco is proud to announce that Merivaara has selected Barco’s Nexxis to form a critical part of its highly acclaimed OpenOR™ digital integrated operating room (OR) solution. Building on an IP network, Nexxis delivers unique imaging and audio management capabilities that ensure total integration of all devices such as endoscopy cameras, computers, scanners and surgical displays, in and beyond the operating room. The Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH) will be one of the first hospitals to install Merivaara’s Nexxis-enabled, OpenOR™ solution.
Pasi Kankaanpää, Head of Merivaara’s INTEGRA business: ”We began our cooperation with Barco almost a year ago. The development project has progressed extremely quickly, thanks to an extremely proficient and dynamic relationship built up between both companies. This has enabled us to bring the new version of OpenOR™, based on an open architecture and modular approach, to market so quickly.”
Benefits for hospitals and surgical teams
This latest version of OpenOR™ delivers several significant new benefits for the hospital and their surgical teams. The solution allows hospitals to optimize the life cycle of their medical devices and schedule the capital investments without linking them to the implementation of the OR integration system. The surgical team, for their part, can now choose which devices they prefer to use and gradually add functionality to the system. In addition, the fiber-based network − with its universal network cable − ensures efficient use of mobile devices such as imaging and endoscopic instruments, as these can easily be transferred from one operating theater to another. They can also be coupled via a single connector – it is simply plug ‘n’ play to add and connect devices as and when the surgical team needs them.
Enhanced teamwork & efficiency
Nexxis’ unique OR-over-IP approach will allow Merivaara to deliver high-quality imaging and ensures the smooth distribution of uncompressed video, graphics, audio, advanced imaging and data throughout the OR with near-zero latency. Thanks to the seamless integration of Nexxis, OpenOR™ will deliver user-friendly, centralized control in a truly flexible, ergonomic, plug-and-play approach for any traditional or hybrid surgical environment. Multidisciplinary teamwork and efficiency will increase.
Integration reduces complexity
“The use and sharing of high-tech equipment in the operating room is increasing. To reduce system complexity, integrating devices and image management is becoming crucial,” said Luc Colle, Vice-President of Sales at Barco Healthcare EMEAI. “By combining our expertise we can help surgical teams improve their workflow, while helping hospitals save considerably on costs. We are proud to be working with Merivaara and to be able to announce the results of our collaboration at MEDICA.”
Merivaara will showcase the latest version of its OpenOR™-over-IP solution at Medica 2013 (hall 14 booth E05) from 20 to 23 November next in Düsseldorf. Barco’s Nexxis will be on display in hall 15, booth E18.
